Finding relief through yoga therapy
An Interview with Felicia Pavlovic
Interview by Barbara Bryan
Your Health Source Magazine
April 2007

When Felicia Pavlovic first began practicing yoga, she was 19. Amidst the deities, chants and incense, it meant nothing more to her than the ambient winds of her faith in Catholicism and prayer. Until 'knowledge' led her to her own embodiment as a yoga therapist.

For almost two decades, Pavlovic at 37, practices her asanas, (postures) while taking annual treks to India in pursuit of being the best yoga therapist she can be. In 2003, it was all nearly obliterated when a near fatal car accident left her with a herniated disc, a broken mandible (jaw) and still to this day, a body that can no longer do the postures she was once so capable
The Source Of Our Teaching
Yogacarya Sri T KrishnamacharyaYogacarya Sri T Krishnamacharya was regarded as the grandfather of modern yoga. In addition to being a yogi, he was also a well known healer, linguist, musician, researcher, author and expert scholar in the six Indian Schools of Vedic Philosophy. He was a true pioneer in his ability to translate ancient teachings and make them relevant in a modern context.
As a teacher his principle was "Teach what is inside you, not as it applies to you, to yourself, but as it applies to the other." He taught that yoga should always be adapted to the unique needs, circumstances and goals of each individual. In refusing to standardize the practice and teaching methodology, he demonstrated a deep understanding of yoga relevant for all students.
During the one hundred years of his life (1888-1989), he inspired thousands of practitioners worldwide and today his teachings have become very popular through his many students - notably his son TKV Desikachar, Indra Devi, BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois.
Satsanga

The Yoga Therapy Toronto community of students will gather on certain Saturday evenings to participate in a 'spiritual community' - or what is known as a 'satsanga.'
In trying to bring together a spiritual community, we are reminded of the following quote: "Ask not what the world needs, rather, ask yourself what will make your heart sing ... because what the world needs most is those whose hearts sing."
We will begin with some gentle flowing movement to prepare the body, as well as explore other aspects such as Chanting, Pranayama (conscious breathing), and Meditation. In addition, we will engage in Philosophical discussions on relevant topics related to modern living and the practice of Yoga.

Private Sessions
All of our sessions are taught on a one-on-one basis, unless there is a specific reason for teaching in a group setting. Instructing on a private basis allows us as Yoga Therapists to gain a deeper understanding of who you are, which will then allow us to plan specifically for your needs.
Once we understand your needs, we develop a personalized home practice that may include some of the following tools:
  • counselling
  • conscious and mindful breathing
  • appropriately sequenced and individualized physical movements
  • meditative practices
  • visualization
  • use of sound and mantra
  • dream yoga
  • guided relaxation & yoga nidra
A typical first consultation and yoga session lasts 90 minutes.

Initial Consultation includes:
  • Intake: Inquiring and assessing student's health history, current treatments and medications, current physical, mental and emotional condition, and student's health and wellness goals.
  • Yoga Practice: Each practice is tailored to suit your specific needs, capabilities, goals, and life circumstances. We will then teach you this personal practice.
  • Take Home: Students will be provided an accompanying diagram of the practice to be done at home.
  • Follow-Up Sessions: All throughout this process, you are strongly encouraged to check in with Felicia or Ante with any questions, concerns or personal feedback. Depending on your needs, follow up sessions may be necessary in order to revise and update your personal practice. As you change, so must the practice.
Private sessions are by appointment only.
So please call or email for a consultation.

The Training Programme - October 2011 to June 2012
** This Teacher Training curriculum is structured in a way that fulfills both the requirements of Yoga Therapy Toronto and the Yoga Alliance. **

Teacher training. It is the very foundation for everything you hope to achieve by becoming a certified yoga instructor.

This 300+ hour training will delve into both the SCIENCE (ie: the various tools and techniques) and the ART (ie: how to apply the tools; when to apply the tools; when not to apply certain techniques, etc.) of teaching yoga and can be viewed as a three-step process emphasizing:

a) Personal Development;
b) Becoming a competent Yoga Instructor;
c) Evolving into a Yoga Teacher and/or Yoga Therapist who can safely and lovingly guide others on their personal journeys.

Personal Development
The primary focus will be on each individual's Personal Development. We respect the fact that we all have different starting points and we all evolve at different rates. As we often say: "Information + Integration = Transformation" and in order for true transformation to occur, we need to nurture our connection with the appropriate practices and relationships.

Yoga Instructor
Another key component of this training is to learn, and properly understand, the various tools and techniques Yoga has to offer. Each student will learn how to appropriately apply these teachings for their own personal practice and learn how to safely guide others.

Yoga Teacher and/or Yoga Therapist
Going one step beyond the level of Instructor, a Teacher is someone who has embodied the teaching in an experiential manner and is able to share that embodied learning with others in a way that is appropriate to that student. Only through your own ongoing learning, practice, mentorship and evolution will you be prepared for the time when students will look to you for instruction, guidance and support.
Programme Benefits
Mentorship
The student-teacher relationship lays the foundations for learning. In this course, each student has a mentor who provides support and advice throughout the training, with an emphasis on cultivating a healthy Student-Teacher relationship based on respect, faith and trust. In addition, for those graduates who are interested in continuing with their studies, Yoga Therapy Toronto offers ongoing mentorship to assist and aid each student along their personal and professional paths.

Personal Attention
This course's strength lies in the personal attention and guidance each student receives for their personal and professional development and offers two-full-time teachers in class at all times for greater personal attention.

Community
An opportunity to participate and engage in a spiritual community of like-minded and open-hearted yoga practitioners. The programme is designed to nurture your development and transformation on a personal level, as well as with your fellow community of students.

Assisting Internship
Once we feel the student is ready, we offer a 1 month Assisting Internship at our centre where each student will get an opportunity to assist a drop-in group class. This enables the student to refine and enhance their ability to work with the general public.

Opportunity to Teach Community Classes
Once we feel the student is ready, we offer an opportunity to teach one of the weekly drop-in Community classes at our centre. This enables the student to obtain valuable teaching experience in the setting of a yoga centre.

Comprehensive Knowledge
The foundation of this programme is based on the respected teachings of yoga master T.Krishnamacharya, along with an integration of western Psychology and Therapy.

Upon Successful Completion of the Training Programme, Participants Will Have:
  • An appropriate personal home practice created and developed over the course of the programme

Admission & Certification Requirements
Admission Requirements:
While everyone can practice yoga for their own health and well-being, not all are ready to become teachers. A few elements are essential in becoming good teachers of yoga. Thus, a few pre-requisites are suggested to apply for this training programme:
  • The applicant must have a sincere desire to help him/herself and others with Yoga.
  • The applicant must be willing to commit to a regular personal practice.
  • Since on completion the applicant will become a Yoga Teacher, they must be mentally and emotionally stable and also possess reasonably good communication skills.
The programme includes periods of intensive study and Yoga practice, which requires dedication and commitment to self-discovery through Yoga. As Yoga is designed for the needs of each unique individual person, there is no requirement for particular levels of fitness, strength or flexibility to do yoga postures.

Certification Requirements:
In order to receive your teaching certification, we require that each student adheres to the following criteria:
  • You miss no more than 2 Sunday sessions over the course of the training; (otherwise, you will be required to attend follow-up sessions in order to receive your certification).
  • You attend a minimum of 30 group classes with Felicia or Ante over the course of the training.
  • You complete and hand in all assignments in a timely manner.
  • You demonstrate a certain proficiency and competency in teaching the art and science of yoga, along with effective communication skills.
Application & Selection Procedure
The applicant must fill in an application form and attend a personal interview. We request to meet every applicant in order to ensure that there is a suitable compatability for all involved, as well as to discuss any further questions, clarifications and expectations about the programme.
Please get your application in as early as possible as there is a tendency for the programme to fill up quickly. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable Enrollment Fee of $500 (plus applicable taxes) is required in order to secure your enrollment in the programme.
